The Organ

Arches National Park is famous for its more than 2,000 arches, including the massive Delicate Arch, Double Arch, the thin Landscape Arch, and the Windows. Apart from these, the park has other natural rock formations like Park Avenue, The Courthouse Towers, Three Gossips, and the Balanced Rock.

During my last visit to the park, the number of vehicles allowed inside was limited due to COVID. To get some great sunrise shots, I arrived at the park before 5 AM. After hiking down through Park Avenue, I stopped at a pullout to enjoy my morning coffee. The weather was gloomy, and I wasn’t sure if the day would yield the photos I was hoping for.

I used the day to take some good daylight photos. The contrast of the red rock against the dark gray skies turned out to be quite nice. As the sun was setting, I decided to stay and witness the magic of the sunset. To my surprise, the cloud cover along the horizon began to disperse, and the sun’s rays created a breathtaking horizontal stream of light. I quickly shifted to a different vantage point to capture the perfect composition, and it was only a matter of time before the entire rock formation was bathed in a glorious, golden light.
