Half Dome Thunderstorm

Of all the landmarks in Yosemite National Park, Half Dome is my absolute favorite. I have taken photos of Half Dome from various locations such as Glacier Point, the Valley Floor, the North Dome, bridges, and meadows at sunrise, sunset, summer, and winter. I have even hiked the Half Dome five times.

This photo of Half Dome was taken in 2012 while on a hike with a friend to the top of Upper Yosemite Falls. The day started out bright and sunny, but the mood suddenly began to change as we neared the summit of Upper Falls. We realized that a major lightning storm was moving across the Valley toward us. Therefore, we scrambled to get back down to the Valley Floor ahead of the storm. While we were pounded by heavy rains during the last part of our descent, we were able to stay out of reach of the lightning.
